Lanarkshire celebrates Nutrition and Hydration Week

Mar 10, 2024

As part of Nutrition and Hydration Week, NHS Lanarkshire is gearing up for a series of events aimed at raising awareness about swallowing disorders and the crucial role speech and language therapists play in addressing them.

This year’s Swallowing Awareness Day, scheduled for Wednesday, March 13th, marks a pivotal moment to highlight the challenges faced by individuals with eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties.

Caitlin Bradley, Speech and Language Therapist, said: “Swallowing Awareness Day provides a vital platform to shed light on the indispensable support SLTs offer to those grappling with swallowing issues. It’s a moment for reflection, education, and collective action towards enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by these challenges.”

“Throughout the week, an array of events is set to take place, including Dysphagia Awareness Training, Swallow Screening Training, Dysphagia Awareness Buzz Sessions and informational stalls.

“These initiatives are aimed at not only increasing understanding of dysphagia but also equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary tools to support individuals living with these conditions.”

“By coming together at these events, we can better understand the challenges faced by those with swallowing difficulties and work towards innovative solutions and support systems.”

Nutrition and Hydration Week has taken place every March since 2012. Its purpose is to bring people together to create energy, focus and fun in order to highlight and educate people on the value of food and drink in maintaining health and wellbeing in health and social care.
