Tackling fraud in NHS Scotland

Nov 18, 2024

Fraud committed against the NHS in Scotland costs millions each year and diverts much needed resources away from patient-centred services.

NHS Lanarkshire, along with all other NHS Scotland Boards, is turning the spotlight on this type of crime during International Fraud Awareness Week 2024 (17-23 November), with the help of NHS Scotland Counter Fraud Services.

“FraudWeek 2024 aims to reduce both the impact and instances of fraud by raising the profile of this type of crime across NHS Scotland,” said Michael Breen, NHS Lanarkshire Director of Finance, who is also the Board’s Counter Fraud Champion.

Michael explained: “My role as Counter Fraud Champion is to promote and embed an awareness of fraud, bribery and corruption.

“Within the public sector, we know that there will always be a small number of people who will commit fraud and these actions are always unacceptable.”

Examples can include:

  • Procurement fraud – contracts are awarded to a relative or friend;
  • Staff fraud – stealing equipment or claiming overtime that is not due;
  • Primary care fraud – a dentist claims expenses for a service they did not provide;
  • External fraud – a patient claims expenses they are not entitled to.

Michael added: “By being vigilant, knowing the signs of fraud and feeling empowered to speak up, we can all help to stop fraud.”

To report fraud or suspected fraud, please contact Morag Holmes, Fraud Liaison Officer, Morag.Holmes@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.

Alternatively, you can call 08000 151628 or visit www.cfs.scot.nhs.uk to report it anonymously via Crimestoppers.

And don’t forget you can also use NHS Lanarkshire’s Whistleblowing policy which is an important element in creating a speak-up culture.
