We’re delighted to have hosted another successful round of Foundation Apprenticeships, offering senior pupils a vocational pathway.
The apprenticeships combine work-based placements with the opportunity to work toward the equivalent of a SQA Higher qualification.
Nicole Grant, Senior Employability Advisor, said: “Students completed placements in partnership with New College Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire College, local councils and secondary schools.
“For the 2024-2025 academic year, placements were offered across key areas such as social services and healthcare, business skills, and IT software.
“In the healthcare placements, students gained hands-on experience in both community and acute settings, working alongside nurses and healthcare support workers. This provided them with practical skills while contributing to high standards of patient care.
“Our IT software apprentices, Robert Clyde and Michael Arthur (pictured), worked on developing a digital sign-in app for their department. Both exceeded expectations, with Robert noting that the programme expanded his knowledge and project management skills, while Michael highlighted improvements in confidence and time management.
“Our Finance department also supported the programme by offering industry insights, helping Accounts Foundation Apprentices explore career pathways within NHS Lanarkshire.
“Additionally, Creative and Digital Media apprentices worked with the Communications Department to produce impactful videos, raising awareness of organ donation.”
Jackie McColl, Deputy Director of Communications, said: “The students showed maturity, creativity and sensitivity, engaging with a specialist nurse and an organ recipient to create respectful and moving content.”
Staff involved in the programme attended a recent celebration event at South Lanarkshire College, where apprentices received certificates for their achievements.
Nicole added: “Work-based learning is essential for preparing young people for the workforce, especially as NHS Lanarkshire looks to become an employer of choice for young talent. With an aging workforce, this initiative helps break misconceptions about the NHS and broadens students’ awareness of the variety of roles available.
“The success of these apprenticeships is due to the invaluable support of NHS Lanarkshire managers and departments who mentor the students, create project briefs and offer guidance. By immersing young people in real work environments, NHS Lanarkshire ensures they are well-prepared for future careers.
“The programme is committed to expanding opportunities for young people both during and after their schooling.”
