A week-long programme of events, dedicated to promoting a positive speak up culture within the health care system, has been announced by Rosemary Agnew, the independent national whistleblowing officer (INWO) for the NHS in Scotland.
Speak Up Week 2024 takes place from 30 September to 4 October and will feature events and activities supporting healthcare workers in Scotland to speak up and improve patient safety.
The theme is ‘Enabling Speaking Up,’ recognising the vital role that open communication and leadership play in ensuring the NHS performs to the highest standards for both patients and staff.
Throughout the week, senior NHS leaders will take part in live, interactive discussions exploring how to enable and support all healthcare workers to speak up confidently and safely when they spot a patient safety issue.
A video interview with a whistleblower and speak up guardian will highlight the importance of a positive speak up culture by reflecting on their experience and learning from more negative aspects of speaking up. An interview with a GP practice manager will explore the challenges of whistleblowing in primary care.
Local events and activities for staff and members will also be planned by health boards and unions.
Rosemary Agnew, the INWO, emphasised the importance of a positive speak up culture in improving patient safety. She said: “When individuals stay silent, the cost to themselves and to patients can be high. It is vital that NHS leaders foster a healthy speak up culture where people are able to speak up freely, without fear of consequence, confident they will be listened to.
“I am delighted so many organisations are planning to join in the vital conversations we will have throughout Speak Up Week and beyond.”
The first live event will take place on 30 September from 3.30pm to 4.15pm and will feature a discussion and Q&A between Professor Caroline Hiscox, chief executive of NHS Lothian, and Rosemary Agnew, the INWO.
