Congratulations go to Dr Iain Hathorn, clinical director primary care and out-of-hours and locality lead GP for Clydesdale, who recently retired after a remarkable 38 years’ service.
Iain joined the NHS in 1984 and, in 1989, joined Lanarkshire’s GP performers list. During his career, Iain has worked as a GP partner in East Kilbride and held medical leadership and management positions across Lanarkshire, as well as being locality lead GP for Camglen and East Kilbride.
Since becoming clinical director for primary care and out-of-hours, Iain has worked tirelessly for the out-of-hours service, frequently covering shifts and providing leadership to the service. Leading from the front, Iain has always supported staff and prioritised their wellbeing.
Iain has been a significant source of medical expertise across a number of Clydesdale and out-of-hours service projects. He has also been involved in numerous service developments and improvements including care homes and as a member of the area drugs and therapeutics committee.
During the Covid pandemic, Iain and colleagues set up and ran the Covid assessment centres.
In his spare time, Iain enjoys curling, running and has had a lifelong interest in conservation, ornithology and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. He is looking forward to spending more time with his family and getting more use of his caravan.
Dr Linda Findlay, medical director, South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Over a long career, Iain has worked tirelessly to provide and improve services for the people of Lanarkshire. He has never shied away from challenges and keeps patients front and centre. Iain will be sorely missed by his colleagues and we wish him a very well deserved, long and happy retirement”.
