Karen Morrow, Realistic Medicine Programme Manager

Karen Morrow, Realistic Medicine Programme Manager, has received a well-deserved Big Shout Out for her exceptional dedication, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to improving patient care through the principles of realistic medicine.

Karen has been a valued member of NHS Lanarkshire for many years, building strong relationships and earning a reputation for “getting things done.” Her ability to overcome challenges and support staff in advancing their practices has been instrumental in her role as Realistic Medicine Programme Manager. With patients’ interests always at the heart of her work, Karen has consistently delivered what is required with humility and grace.

Russell Coulthard, Director of Acute Services, said: “One of Karen’s significant contributions has been her work on shared decision-making, ensuring patients have a voice in planning their care. She was influential in the introduction of the “5 Questions” for patients to ask during appointments, empowering them to actively participate in their healthcare decisions, further more embedding this approach into our consent policy.   Additionally, Karen has been recognized nationally for her pathway work related to treatment escalation tools, enhancing NHS Lanarkshire’s reputation in the field of realistic medicine.

“Karen has also played a pivotal role in introducing the RESPECT tool to Lanarkshire’s care home, community and acute settings. This tool ensures patients’ wishes are recorded digitally thus enhancing health professionals in accessing information concerning their future healthcare, reflecting Karen’s commitment to patient-centered care. Her support of the Realistic Medicine doctors and her ability to expertly coordinate ongoing projects has been invaluable.

“As Karen approaches her retirement in March this year, it is clear that her departure will be deeply felt by the team and the wider NHS Lanarkshire community. Her tireless efforts, dedication, and leadership have left a lasting impact on the organization and the patients it serves.”

A big shout out to Karen Morrow for her outstanding work in realistic medicine and her dedication to improving patient care. Thank you, Karen, for all that you have done and continue to do. You will be greatly missed, and your contributions will be remembered for years to come!
