Help shape the future of nursing and midwifery in Lanarkshire

May 12, 2025

As we mark International Nurses Day, it’s the perfect time to recognise not only the incredible contribution of nurses and midwives across Lanarkshire – but also the ways you can help shape the future of the profession.

The Area Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Committee (ANMAC) is your opportunity to do just that.

ANMAC brings together representatives from all corners of our nursing and midwifery workforce to share experiences, raise issues, and influence decision-making across NHS Lanarkshire.

The committee helps ensure frontline voices are heard at the highest level – and we’re currently encouraging more staff from clinical roles to get involved.

Margot Russell, Director of NMAHP Practice Development, said: “ANMAC plays a vital role in connecting the experiences of frontline staff with the strategic direction of nursing and midwifery services. It ensures that what matters to our staff – and to the people we care for – is reflected in the decisions we make at Board level.

“It’s not just about raising issues; it’s about making change happen, celebrating innovation, and building a strong, supportive professional community. This is a real opportunity to influence change and be part of a supportive network of peers who are passionate about driving improvement and sharing best practice.”

The committee meets every six weeks and includes members from a wide range of nursing and midwifery roles and settings – from hospitals and community services to mental health and public health.

Members are actively involved in raising local issues, contributing to national consultations and supporting improvement projects. Being part of ANMAC offers valuable opportunities for professional development, policy influence and peer networking.

ANMAC also supports continuous improvement in care delivery, patient experience and professional development. The committee is committed to ensuring a diverse range of voices and experiences are represented – including those from early career staff and under-represented specialties.
