What to do if you have symptoms

Anyone with symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) should self-isolate immediately and book a test.

The symptoms of COVID-19 are new:

  • continuous cough
  • fever/high temperature (37.8C or greater)
  • loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste (anosmia)

If your symptoms worsen or do not improve after seven days call NHS 24 on 111.

For patients who do not have Coronavirus symptoms, they should continue to telephone their practice when open and not call NHS 24. During the out-of-hours period, when displaying non-Coronavirus symptoms, only call 111 if you need urgent assessment and cannot wait until your practice is open.

How to request a test

For up-to-date information on who is eligible to be tested and where to go to access this, please visit the NHS Inform website. If you are unable to access the website, please call 0800 028 2816 to book a test.

How to Self-isolate

Self-isolation means you should remain at home and should not go to work, school, public areas or use public transport. You should not go out to buy food or other essentials.  Staying at home helps keep your loved ones and community safe. Other members of your household do not need to isolate unless they have also been contacted by Test & Protect service or you start to develop symptoms.

For advice and guidance on how to self-isolate, visit the NHS Inform website.

How to get a Sick Note if you have Coronavirus symptoms or are self-isolating

If you need a sick note due to Coronavirus, please do not call NHS 24 or your practice and do not go to the surgery. You can download an isolation note directly from NHS Inform here.

What happens when you are phoned by the Test & Protect service

When you are phoned by the Test & Protect service, they will provide advice to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Travel to countries for private healthcare under current circumstances is discouraged
