Flu has arrived early and is spreading fast across Scotland. The number of people admitted to hospital is already higher than previous years, and cases are rising every week. Flu spreads easily when people mix indoors at family gatherings, parties, and festive events. With Christmas just around the corner, now is the time to act.

To support increased demand and make vaccination more accessible, extra drop-in clinics have now been introduced across Lanarkshire, alongside existing appointment options. Vaccination centres are operating seven days a week, providing flexible opportunities for those eligible to receive the flu vaccine.

Everyone invited for the flu vaccine is strongly encouraged to attend one of the clinics and take up the offer of protection this winter.

Professor Soumen Sengupta, Chief Officer, South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership recently visited the vaccination clinic at Eddlewood in Hamilton to meet the staff and thank them for their ongoing work in vaccinating the residents of Lanarkshire.

Professor Sengupta said:  “Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu-related complications and hospitalisation. I encourage everyone who is invited to take up the offer and protect themselves and their loved ones through this festive season.

During my visit to the Eddlewood vaccination clinic, I was hugely impressed by the efficiency and professionalism of the team, and equally by the warmth and friendliness that put people at ease.

“My thanks to our vaccination teams who have worked tirelessly to make this possible. Their commitment and care are making a real difference.

“My thanks also to every person across our communities who has already come forward to be vaccinated. By doing so, you are not only protecting yourself but helping to keep your family, friends, and neighbours safe.”

Tobias Tipper, general manager for the Lanarkshire vaccination service added: “Our teams are working tirelessly, seven days a week, to make vaccination as accessible as possible. The introduction of extra drop-in clinics means more flexibility for those who want to attend without an appointment.

“If you have questions about the flu vaccine and the programme, the NHS Inform website is an excellent resource.

“Details of where and when weekly clinics are open, and whether they are appointment or drop-in, can also be found on the NHS Lanarkshire website.”
