Lanarkshire Celebrates International Day of the Midwife

May 6, 2024

Midwives across Lanarkshire celebrated International Day of the Midwife on 5 May.

The yearly celebration celebrates the role that midwives have to play in the lives of families and their contributions to healthcare and society.

This year midwives and student midwives took to social media platforms to share their stories, highlighting the profound reasons that drive their dedication to the profession.

Robyn, a midwife, shared: “I love making women feel empowered during one of the most significant moments of their lives. Being a midwife allows you to be an integral part of a journey filled with joy, challenges and profound connections.”

Such sentiments resonate deeply with Monica, another midwife, who expresses, “Being a midwife is a fulfilling and rewarding job – supporting women through their labour and welcoming their baby into the world.”

These heartfelt statements reflect the unwavering commitment and compassion shown by midwives within the NHS Lanarkshire community and beyond.

Their role extends far beyond the delivery room, encompassing emotional support, guidance, and advocacy for women and families during pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond.

Leah Noble, Interim Deputy Director of Midwifery, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “As we celebrate International Day of the Midwife, it is crucial to recognise and appreciate the tireless efforts of these professionals in promoting the health and wellbeing of mothers and babies.

“As we mark this special day, I would like to extends my deepest gratitude to all midwives for their dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to providing exceptional care to women and families across Lanarkshire.”
