Hairmyres launches improvement workshops as part of Site Safety Improvement Programme

Mar 4, 2026

Colleagues at University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH) have taken part in the first two improvement workshops as part of their Site Safety Improvement Programme (SSIP) -bringing staff together to better understand how the hospital system works and identify areas for meaningful change.

The sessions, which focused on ED/EUA/Ambulatory Care and Downstream Flow, are the first of four workshops designed to support teams to reflect on current challenges, explore data and frontline experience, and co-design improvement priorities that will strengthen patient safety and flow across the site.

The workshops welcomed multi-disciplinary colleagues from across the site. Each session began by exploring participants’ hopes and fears, followed by discussion on what the Site Safety Improvement Programme means locally and how improvement work can be shaped by both data and the experience of staff working in the system every day.

Margaret Meek, Hospital Site Director, said: “The workshops have been designed to bring colleagues together in an open and supportive environment where we can have honest conversations and work through challenges collectively.

“By using both data and the experience of people working across the hospital every day, we’re building a shared understanding of how different parts of the system connect and influence each other.

“The sessions have focused on collaborative discussions around hospital flow, identifying barriers and opportunities, and agreeing where we should focus our improvement efforts first.

“What’s been really encouraging is the willingness of teams to work together, share ideas and shape the priorities for the next stages of the programme so that we can make practical improvements that benefit both patients and staff.”

The workshops form part of an ongoing programme to support safer, more effective care and improve flow across the site. Further sessions will continue to build on the learning from the first two workshops, helping teams to prioritise actions and move into delivery.

The next workshops will continue in early March, with teams returning to review progress and refine improvement priorities.
