School students took part in our latest NextGen careers information event.
The NextGen programme is facilitated by NHS Lanarkshire’s Medical Education Department with the main objective of assisting the next generation of medics access experience.
Leeann Montgomery, Training Co-ordinator for NextGen, said: “The event is designed to highlight all the careers we have available. It was a great success, attended by 319 young people, teachers, parents and guardians from all over Lanarkshire.
“Representatives from over 32 different professions were available to chat and share their insights into their jobs as well as answering questions about qualifications, careers and pathways.
“The young people also enjoyed taking part in simulation sessions, letting them try their hand at the ‘put the organs in the body’ game, inserting a cannula and injecting a muscle. These sessions proved extremely popular, with mums, dads and grandparents also getting involved.”
The NextGen programme offers a structured series of events for school pupils interested in a career in medicine, with the opportunity to explore opportunities and meet staff through a variety of events.
As well as careers advice events, it offers medical skills introduction days, facilitates a controlled work experience programme and works alongside all 42 secondary schools in Lanarkshire.
The next careers event will be on 10 September 2026. If you would like to get involved please drop an email to leeann.montgomery@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk
