A maternity team at University Hospital Wishaw has been shortlisted for the 2025 NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards for their life-saving work to reduce stillbirth rates through the Holistic Antenatal Care Pathway.
Launched during the Covid-19 pandemic, the pathway ensures that every pregnant woman receives the right care, at the right time, from the right professional. Early risk assessments flag medical, social and lifestyle factors, while enhanced surveillance and continuity of carer models provide personalised support throughout pregnancy.
The project is fuelled by cross-team collaboration — with midwives, obstetricians, sonographers and QI staff meeting weekly to adapt and implement improvements at pace. Co-designed resources also help families better understand their care and make informed choices.
The results are remarkable: by 2024, the stillbirth rate had fallen by over 43% (adjusted), with more than 20 babies’ lives saved in just one year.
