Falls Prevention Week steps up with energy and action

Sep 26, 2025

Staff across NHS Lanarkshire have been stepping up to support Falls Prevention Week (22–26 September) – a dedicated campaign to raise awareness of how simple actions can reduce the risk of falls and keep people safe and steady on their feet.

The week featured a suite of daily messages across social media and internal channels, each offering a practical tip to help prevent falls – both in the community and in clinical settings.

From encouraging movement and exercise, to improving lighting, removing hazards in the home, and checking medications, the campaign aimed to empower staff, patients, carers and families with easy, actionable advice.

One of the standout moments came when the Falls Prevention Team surprised visitors at the Time Capsule leisure centre with a lively flashmob.

The performance, set to upbeat music, saw staff showcasing simple movements and dance steps to highlight the importance of staying active as a way to reduce falls risk – and proved that prevention doesn’t have to be boring!

Angela Scott, NHS Lanarkshire Falls Hub, said: Falls are one of the leading causes of hospital admissions for older people, but many can be prevented with small, everyday changes.

“This week has been about starting conversations and encouraging people to take action – whether that’s moving more, checking that their home environment is safe, or getting a medication review if they’re feeling dizzy or unsteady.

“The flashmob was a fun and unexpected way to raise awareness, but there’s a serious message behind it. Movement helps maintain strength and balance, and staying active can make a huge difference to someone’s independence and wellbeing.”

“Throughout the week, staff have been encouraged to think about how they can support patients and colleagues to reduce falls – whether by offering advice, sharing resources, or identifying risks in ward environments and care plans.”

The campaign also signposted to the NHS Lanarkshire Falls Prevention Service, which offers support and advice to people across the area who may be at risk of falling, or who have experienced a fall in the past.
