Emergency Medicine Consultant Dr Farhat Mushtaq is setting a new standard for inclusive leadership — and now her pioneering work has earned her a finalist place in the 2025 NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards.
Based at University Hospital Hairmyres, Farhat has developed a dedicated teaching and induction programme for International Medical Graduates, helping new doctors navigate NHS systems, policies and patient care with confidence and clarity. Her approach is grounded in compassion, dignity and equity.
She has also enriched cultural understanding across her department through bespoke equality and diversity sessions, ensuring staff are better equipped to meet the needs of Lanarkshire’s diverse population.
As Chair of NHS Lanarkshire’s Ethnic Minority Forum — and now a member of its Executive group — Farhat leads quietly but powerfully, creating space for every voice and driving change that’s already influencing practice nationally.
Described as humble, collaborative and deeply committed, Farhat’s work continues to shape a stronger, fairer NHS for everyone.
