A team of 16 competitors from TKA Karate Association recently travelled to Malmo, Sweden to fly the flag for Scotland, with one returning a world champion.
Nicola Wightman, extended scope practitioner (ESP) physiotherapist with the knee clinic at University Hospital Wishaw, achieved gold in her weight category for Kumite (fighting), achieving the title as world champion for 2025.
Nicola’s son Alfie (9 years) – who also competes for Scotland – travelled with her and became a champion in the making by being placed fourth in his categories.
Nicola said: “I’m incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to represent Scotland on the world stage in Sweden – it was even more special to have my son competing there with me.
“I am truly humbled to have this title, most will only see the gold medal but it’s the years of preparation, discipline, hard work and persistence that make it all achievable and I must say, it was worth every moment”.
Thirty-three countries were represented at the event, with the Scottish team returning with a total of 13 medals.
