A quiet force for good on Ward 24 at University Hospital Monklands has been named as the second finalist in this year’s NHS Lanarkshire Staff Awards.
Boma Odocha, Clinical Support Worker in Old Age Psychiatry, is described by colleagues as “an asset to the ward” – someone who embodies calm, compassion and care in every interaction.
From meticulously preparing beds and restocking equipment before most people arrive, to calmly reassuring patients with complex cognitive or behavioural needs, Boma is known as the dependable presence who keeps things running – both practically and emotionally. Her attention to detail and quiet initiative mean nurses can focus on clinical care, confident that patients are in safe hands.
“She’s unassuming, but completely indispensable,” said one team member. “She just gets things done – always one step ahead.”
Despite living miles away and relying on public transport, Boma is one of the most punctual members of staff. She is always ready to step in during busy periods, medication rounds or unexpected admissions.
Families often comment on the warmth and trust Boma builds with patients – especially those who seem hard to reach. With patience, empathy and a gentle manner, she helps people feel seen, heard and safe.
Boma’s story is being shared as part of a short film series introducing our 2025 finalists. You can watch her video above.
