After an extraordinary career spanning more than five decades, dentist Michael Arthur has retired.
Michael has been a cornerstone of dental care in Wishaw and the surrounding communities for an incredible 53 years, delivering general dental services with unwavering commitment and compassion.
He comes from a family of dentists. His brother, John, practised in Motherwell and his other brother, Laurie, was in Uddingston. Michael’s wife, Pearl, worked in dentistry for the health board, as did John’s wife, Dorothy.
Colleagues have paid tribute, noting his legacy is one of excellence, professionalism and deep care.
Michael established his practice in Wishaw Main Street in 1972 and also provided dental services to the Scottish Prison Service at Longriggend for 17 years.
He was one of the first appointed as a dental practice premises inspector, helping to introduce and establish the inspection programme that continues to support high standards across practices today.
Caroline Hyland, Clinical Director for NHS Lanarkshire’s General Dental Services, said: “Michael’s guidance and mentorship have been invaluable to many local dentists and practices over the years. He was an early vocational trainer, ensuring excellence in training and mentoring to young dentists to maintain high standards of practice.
“Beyond his clinical work, Michael has played a vital role in shaping the future of NHS dentistry in Lanarkshire and beyond. His contributions to the board’s Area Dental Advisory Committee, GP Sub-Committee and the Primary Care Dental Committee have helped promote and support the profession both locally and nationally. He co-created the Mid Lanarkshire Emergency Dental Service in 1990, providing 24-hour emergency dental care through a network of 70 dentists.
“Michael also served as chair of the British Dental Association’s Scottish Council from 2003 to 2009, a role for which he was awarded a BDA Fellowship in 2012 to recognise his outstanding service to the profession.
“Michael’s legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. We thank him for his outstanding service and dedication to NHS Lanarkshire.”
