New Moving Medicine website: integrate physical activity into patient care

Sep 9, 2025

Moving Medicine, the website that integrates physical activity into patient care, has been upgraded.

Their newly launched site offers expanded opportunities to bring together trusted, evidence-based resources and tailored signposting to support NHS and leisure sector initiatives.

Key changes include the option to select comorbidities when having a person-centred conversation about physical activity. The upgraded site lets healthcare professionals personalise consultations by selecting as many conditions as the patient presents with. This will then provide a selection of apps, organisations and activities that can help support the patient. There is also a new evidence finder that supports health professionals to widen their physical activity knowledge and support future learning.

David Kennedy, Physical Activity for Health Programme Co-ordinator, NHS Lanarkshire’s Healthy Lifestyle and Weight Management Service (LWMS), said: “We hope NHS Lanarkshire health professionals and patients benefit greatly from this new website. Physical Activity has a range of benefits to our overall physical and mental health, both immediate and long-term.

“Our team are keen to support all NHS Lanarkshire health professionals to signpost individuals to physical activity opportunities both locally and online, and Moving Medicine is a great resource to encourage active conversations with patients, as well as a range of national resources.

“Locally, we work closely with North Lanarkshire Council – Active & Creative Communities and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, where health professionals can utilise our ‘Active Health Prescriptions’ (AH) and ‘Physical Activity Prescriptions’ (PAP). These are our partnership referral pathways which enable GPs, practice nurses, physiotherapists and wider allied health professionals to refer patients who would benefit both physically and psychologically from being more physically active.

“Staff can find out more about referring patients specifically to North and South Lanarkshire on the LWMS Physical Activity FirstPort page.

Moving Medicine is an initiative by the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine UK, in partnership with Sport England and the Office for Health Inequalities and Disparities.
