University Hospital Wishaw is expanding services for older people with frailty by creating a new frailty assessment unit.

As part of this, the hospital is looking to recruit a range of dedicated healthcare professionals to join the team.

Staff are being recruited across a range of roles, including nurses, healthcare support workers, advanced nurse practitioners, pharmacists, allied health professionals and medical staff.

Gillian Thomson, senior charge nurse for ward 12 (medicine for older adults) at University Hospital Wishaw, said: “We’re all excited about the new frailty unit, it will give us an opportunity to further develop our own skills and to shape the future of what looking after frail older patients is going to look like in Lanarkshire.

“There is a lot of collaboration between specialties, we are really like one big family. Come and join us.”

The frailty assessment unit will provide specialist care, focusing on early assessment, treatment and safe discharge.

The frailty unit also supports national initiatives such as the Discharge without Delay programme, helping improve patient flow across the health and care system.

Eilis Cusack, allied health professional team lead, said: “The expansion of our frailty service is very exciting. Our patients will benefit from the expansion of our team with a diverse skill set. It’s also exciting that we’re going to have an allied health professional frailty practitioner, which is a new post to our team, and a support worker to be able to help us.

“Together, we’re making sure that we’re focusing on what matters most to the patient – getting their independence back in terms of their function and daily activities, in their mobility and getting them home quicker.”
