NHS Lanarkshire and the the two local University Health and Social Care Partnerships are marking Armed Forces Week and paying tribute to the vital contributions of serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Craig Cunningham, NHS Lanarkshire’s Armed Forces and Veteran Champion, has issued a message of recognition on behalf of all partners, reaffirming their shared commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant – a national promise to ensure that those who serve or have served in the UK armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly and with respect in the communities where they live, work and access services.

“NHS Lanarkshire is a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant and a proud employer of many health and care professionals who have joined our ranks following military careers,” said Craig, who is also Head of Commissioning and Performance for South Lanarkshire University Health & Social Care Partnership.

“The covenant is not just symbolic — it underpins our practical efforts to ensure that no member of the armed forces community faces disadvantage in accessing healthcare, employment or support. Colleagues with a military background bring immense dedication, skill and resilience. Their presence enriches our teams, and their contributions are felt in every corner of the service — from acute care to mental health and community settings.”

In Lanarkshire, specialist support for veterans is available through Veterans First Point (pictured) – a dedicated pathway co-designed by veterans, for veterans. The service provides access to psychological therapies and peer-led support for a wide range of wellbeing, social and practical needs.

In partnership with the Defence Medical Welfare Service, NHS Lanarkshire also ensures direct emotional and practical support is available for veterans navigating the health system, including help with social care, housing and everyday life beyond hospital.

Craig added: “Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to reaffirm our collective gratitude to those who serve or have served, and to highlight the trusted support systems in place for them and their families. We’re proud of the role our organisations play in championing the armed forces community – and in helping veterans thrive in civilian life.”
