SPOTLIGHT

Shining a light on link between alcohol and cancer

Jun 23, 2025

Cancer Prevention Action Week (June 23-29) is putting the focus on the dangers of alcohol.

Celia Briffa-Watt, NHS Lanarkshire Consultant in Public Health, said: “Cancer Prevention Action Week is organised by the World Cancer Research Fund.

“The aim this year is to raise awareness of the seven cancers alcohol will increase the risk of – breast, bowel, mouth and throat, oesophageal, liver and stomach.

“Alcohol is one of the biggest preventable causes of ill health, increasing not only the risk of those cancers but also heart disease and liver damage.

“We currently recommend that people drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, spread across at least three days. The World Cancer Research Fund is issuing further guidance – limit alcohol consumption, don’t drink alcohol as part of everyday life.”

Their top tips to drink less are:

  • Take breaks from alcohol or have alcohol free days
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water when drinking alcohol
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with sugar-free soft drinks, low-alcohol or alcohol-free drinks
  • Make a plan or set a budget to limit drinks
  • Let friends and family know you are cutting down so that they can support too.
