Men’s Health Week focus: do your bowel screening test

Jun 13, 2025

Men’s Health Week (9–15 June) is about supporting staff to look after their own health – and encouraging friends and family to do the same.

One of the most effective checks we can complete is the home bowel screening test that NHS Scotland posts to everyone aged 50–74 every two years.

It takes just one sample, done in private, and it could save your life.

Morag Nicholson, Public Health Programme Manager, said: “Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer and the second‑leading cause of cancer death in Scotland. Yet screening can spot the disease long before symptoms appear, or even prevent it by finding and removing pre‑cancerous growths.

The new FIT kit is simple – one quick sample, label the tube and pop it in the prepaid envelope. Most people get the all‑clear; anyone with an abnormal result is invited for further checks so any problems can be treated early. If you’ve mislaid your kit or made a mistake, you can request a replacement free of charge.”

Staff aged 50–74 can self‑refer by calling the free helpline 0800 0121 833.
