As hay fever season begins, people are being encouraged to head straight to a local pharmacy, shop or supermarket for fast, effective relief from symptoms.

There is no need to wait for a GP appointment – a box of effective hay fever tablets (antihistamines) can cost as little as 79p and work just as well as those prescribed by a doctor.

Dr Veronica Rainey, Associate Medical Director at NHS Lanarkshire, said: “Hay fever affects up to one in five people in the UK but it doesn’t have to interrupt your life. You can get what you need quickly and get back to enjoying your day without the need for an appointment with your GP.

“Why wait for a GP appointment when you can get quick, easy access to hay fever tablets, eye drops or nasal sprays from your local shop, supermarket or pharmacy? These treatments are affordable, widely available and effective.”

Choosing to manage hay fever yourself means:

  • Faster relief – no appointment needed
  • More convenience – available in most shops and pharmacies
  • More control – treat symptoms as soon as they start

This will also help ease both time pressure on GPs and the cost to the NHS.

Dr Rainey added: “When hay fever tablets are prescribed by a GP, it can cost the NHS up to £35 due to the cost of the medicine and the consultation.

“This is money and appointment time that could be better used for patients with more serious health needs.”
