On National Supported Internship Day, NHS Lanarkshire proudly celebrates Project SEARCH, an innovative vocational training programme that empowers adults with additional support needs to transition into meaningful employment.
This life-changing initiative is a shining example of collaboration, bringing together NHS Lanarkshire, New College Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council and ISS Facilities Management to provide real-world work experience and career opportunities.
Running throughout the academic year, Project SEARCH offers participants a structured curriculum of employability classes, followed by three immersive work placements across Lanarkshire’s acute hospitals. These experiences help individuals build confidence, enhance employability skills and ultimately secure jobs within the local community.
Amy, a former Project SEARCH student who is now a porter at University Hospital Wishaw, shared how the programme changed her life.
She said: “I enjoyed my placements as I got to see how the hospital works and meet new people. It really helped boost my confidence and I now find it much easier to talk to others. I learned that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. There are so many opportunities within NHS Lanarkshire and having a disability shouldn’t stop you. Everyone in the programme is so caring and truly wants the best for you.”
Now in its 14th year, Project SEARCH has supported over 300 students, with an incredible 70 per cent achieving positive career outcomes. By breaking down barriers to employment, this programme is changing lives and proving that everyone has the potential to succeed.
On this special day, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff, mentors and partners who make this programme possible. Your support and commitment continue to open doors, create opportunities and shape a more inclusive workforce for the future.
