Animation showing 15 metres around hospital building that is to be smoke-free

The Quit Your Way team has put together a short and engaging video for NHS Lanarkshire staff to find out everything they need to know about supporting the No Smoking Legislation, which makes it illegal for anyone to smoke within 15 metres of a hospital building.

Second-hand smoke can drift from the main entrances to hospital departments which is harmful to all. The legislation was introduced to protect staff, patients and visitors from the harms of second-hand tobacco smoke within NHS healthcare settings.

This new video is part of a suite of activity to highlight smoking is not allowed anywhere on NHS Lanarkshire grounds, alongside the 15 metre perimeter that falls under the legislation. It also highlights the support available to people who smoke and directs them to Quit Your Way for advice and information.

Margaret Sim, Health Improvement Senior – Quit Your Way, NHS Lanarkshire saidAlthough we have a current no smoking policy within NHS Lanarkshire, which the majority of people who visit our hospitals follow, we recognise it remains a challenge.

“We put together this informative video to provide clear guidance for NHS Lanarkshire staff which includes how to report smoking on our grounds, policy around e-cigarettes, what support is available from Quit Your Way and how the No Smoking Legislation supports a healthier environment.

“We now have monthly information stalls at each of the hospital sites where you can have an informal chat regarding the available our services.”

NHS Lanarkshire has an existing No Smoking Policy where smoking and e-cigarettes are not allowed at or around doorways or anywhere on hospital grounds. Instead, the Quit Your Way team offers free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to anyone who smokes to help them manage their nicotine withdrawal or quit smoking during their hospital visit.

Quit Your Way, provides support, information and NRT to all NHS Lanarkshire staff, patients and visitors who are ready to quit smoking, regardless if they have tried to quit before, and their families.

Quit Your Way can be contacted Monday – Friday from 9am until 5pm.

To find out about the stop smoking services and to access the best support to quit in your area call the Quit Your Way helpline service on 0800 84 84 84 or visit QuitYourWay.scot.
