This week, NHS Lanarkshire is celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025 (3-7 March), highlighting the impact of apprenticeships and the role they play in shaping the future of our workforce.
As one of the largest employers in the region, NHS Lanarkshire is committed to providing opportunities for young people and supporting them in developing the skills and experience needed for a career in healthcare.
The apprenticeship programme spans a range of areas, including healthcare, IT, pharmacy, and business administration, with plans to expand further in the future.
Nicole Grant, Senior Employability Advisor for NHS Lanarkshire, said:
“Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain valuable skills, earn while they learn, and take the first steps in a rewarding career. They provide hands-on experience in real-world settings, allowing apprentices to develop confidence, adaptability, and resilience.
“At NHS Lanarkshire, we are committed to supporting our apprentices every step of the way, ensuring they have access to buddies in their department, training and wrap-around support from the Employability Team, via check-in meetings and group networking sessions to encourage peer to peer support and enhance their employability skills. Our goal is to help them grow into skilled professionals who can make a meaningful contribution to the healthcare sector while feeling valued and empowered within their roles.”
Over the years, the programme has seen many success stories, with apprentices securing permanent roles, progressing within the organisation, and bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to their teams. Managers across the organisation have also benefited, with apprentices helping to bridge skills gaps, bring innovative perspectives, and build a sustainable workforce for the future.
To mark Scottish Apprenticeship Week, NHS Lanarkshire has been sharing stories from apprentices and managers about their experiences, highlighting the positive impact of the programme.
Nicole added: “Seeing our apprentices thrive and develop their confidence and skills throughout their time with us is incredibly rewarding. They are the future of NHS Lanarkshire, and we are proud to be investing in their development. We wouldn’t have the success stories that we do without their commitment from our NHS managers and departments who invest their time and expertise to training these young people. We would love to see our programmes expand to new departments and areas of the organisation.”
