Celebrating success of summer placement programme

Oct 11, 2024

This summer, NHS Lanarkshire was thrilled to participate in North Lanarkshire Council’s school pupil summer placement programme which hosted a total of 128 pupils, welcoming 4 enthusiastic pupils into administrative roles across various departments.

Following the council’s successful 2023 pilot with 23 students, which aimed to introduce young people aged 16+ to the workplace, the initiative was broadened in 2024 to include employer partners, and we were proud to play a part in shaping the workforce of the future. This programme also highlights NHS Lanarkshire’s commitment as an active anchor organisation promoting access to quality jobs, reducing poverty and inequalities in our local communities.

From July to August 2024, the pupils embarked on a rewarding six-week placement, gaining invaluable work experience and developing their skills in real-world settings. One of these pupils was Rebecca, who joined the CAMHS team at Udston Hospital.

Rebecca shared her reflections on the experience:

What did you enjoy about your summer placement?
“I enjoyed every minute of my placement! I was trusted with responsibility and worked independently on tasks, while also having an amazing team around me. I loved the routine of working Monday to Friday and having clear tasks to complete each day. My favourite part was working on courtesy letters and transferring patient data. I also built my confidence by doing online training sessions and handling filing.”

What support did you receive during your role?
“My managers were incredibly supportive, always available to guide me and answer any questions I had. Everyone in the office made me feel welcome and helped me throughout my placement. The North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Employability Team were also in regular contact, ensuring I felt comfortable and supported.”

What advice would you give to someone considering a summer placement?
“Anyone who can, should definitely apply for a summer job! Even though it’s temporary, it opens up so many opportunities, whether you’re applying for university or other jobs. I was nervous at first, but I’m so glad I went through with it. I’ve met so many amazing people and gained skills I never thought I could until I was older.”

Throughout the placement, NHS Lanarkshire’s Employability Team stayed closely involved, meeting weekly with the participants to check in and discuss their next steps after the programme. Now, as the pupils continue their education or move on to further studies, they all feel that the experience has greatly boosted their confidence, knowledge, and readiness for their future careers.

At the celebration event Provost Kenneth Duffy, who presented the pupils with their awards, expressed his admiration, stating, “The enthusiasm and commitment shown by these young people has been truly inspiring. Their contributions over the summer have been invaluable, and they should be extremely proud of their achievements.”

We are incredibly proud of the success of this summer’s placements and look forward to partnering with North Lanarkshire Council again next year to continue offering these valuable opportunities to the next generation of talent.
