The latest Executive Flow Oversight Board (EFOB), held at University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH) last week, showcased the great work being done across the site as they gear up for the Operation FLOW firebreak next month.
The key objective of EFOB is to oversee and connect the various strands of priority work across the health board and the partnerships, to bring performance improvement, enhanced patient safety and even greater staff wellbeing.
EFOB’s aim is to oversee and monitor the improvement work within NHS Lanarkshire and the two university health & social care partnerships.
The senior team were given a tour of the emergency department, emergency assessment unit and minor injuries following the EFOB.
It was yet another productive EFOB meeting as the site continues to develop transformational approaches that will make a real improvement to patient flow.
The focus as we move towards the new firebreak will be delayed discharge, minor injuries and flow through the system. For example, we are providing greater resilience within the minor injuries unit rota which will improve clinical capability for assessment and treatment and are refocusing our ambulatory care pathways.
The site is implementing a six step model which is critical to sustainable change. This model aims to:
- improve patient care and experience
- improve staff experience and wellbeing
A number of actions are planned including:
- Stabilisation of emergency department workforce
- Development of Heart Failure virtual ward capacity to deliver increased capacity for early supported discharge in heart failure patients and increased use of Hospital @ Home for ongoing acute level care out of hospital
- Increased use of the discharge lounge to free up ward capacity
- Protection of Minors capacity in ED
- Joint work with South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership to support patient’s being discharged on their planned date of discharge.
