Vital connection between sleep and mental health

Jul 26, 2024

Quality sleep is essential for cognitive function, emotional regulation and physical health. It allows the brain to process emotions, consolidate memories and repair the body. For NHS staff, adequate sleep is not a luxury but a necessity that enables them to perform their duties effectively and maintain their own health.

Addressing sleep hygiene is a proactive step towards improving mental health. Simple measures such as establishing a regular sleep schedule, creating a restful environment and avoiding stimulants before bedtime can make a significant difference.

Nicola Ball, a therapist with NHS Lanarkshire’s counselling service, The Talking Rooms, said: “As an experienced therapist, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with NHS Lanarkshire staff members who tirelessly dedicate themselves to the wellbeing of others. In the demanding environment of healthcare, it is paramount to recognise the crucial link between sleep and mental health, particularly for those on the frontline. Having a workplace culture that values and supports adequate rest is crucial.

“NHS staff often face irregular hours, high-stress situations and the emotional toll of caring for patients. These factors can severely disrupt sleep patterns, leading to chronic sleep deprivation. Unfortunately, the consequences of inadequate sleep extend far beyond mere fatigue. Poor sleep quality can exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and burnout, creating a detrimental cycle that affects both personal wellbeing and professional performance.”

The Talking Rooms provide a free, confidential counselling service to support the mental health and wellbeing of staff and is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. To contact the service, please telephone 0800 138 9150. Alternatively, you can self-refer at: www.thetalkingrooms.com/refer

The counselling service is completely confidential and no personal information will be shared with line managers or the organisation.
