NHS Lanarkshire logo and 75 years of the NHS

NHS Lanarkshire is proud to announce the launch of its new online Summer Health Hub, designed to provide residents with essential health information and advice for the summer months.

The hub offers guidance on a range of topics including insect bites, heat-related conditions, and the safe use of prescribed medicines while travelling. It also provides crucial food safety tips to help avoid gastrointestinal issues.

The Summer Health Hub is accessible via the NHS Lanarkshire website.

Chris Deighan, Medical Director for NHS Lanarkshire, emphasised the importance of the hub: “Our Summer Health Hub is a valuable resource for residents to ensure they stay healthy and safe during the warmer months.

“I would urge residents to familiarise themselves with the broad range of NHS services available to them. In order to keep emergency departments free for those with life-threatening needs, it is crucial to seek the right care in the right place.”

For urgent care that is not life-threatening, residents should call NHS 24 on 111 at any time. NHS 24 will provide an assessment by telephone and direct patients to the appropriate care, whether it be self-care at home, a pharmacy, optician, dentist, GP, or minor injuries unit.

Common conditions such as small cuts, bites, sprains, and pain can often be treated at home with over-the-counter medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen, and antiseptic cream. Local community pharmacies are the first point of contact for advice on minor illnesses and can supply necessary medicines.

Lauren Gibson, Lead Pharmacist for Community Pharmacy Services said: “Pharmacies play a crucial role in providing healthcare advice and support. From managing allergies to addressing minor infections, your local pharmacy offers a range of services to help.”

“Your local pharmacy can treat a variety of minor common conditions without a prescription through its Pharmacy First Service, and its Pharmacy First Plus Service.”

For life-threatening emergencies, always call 999.
