Transformation work successes at University Hospital Hairmyres

Jun 21, 2024

A number of successes were spotlighted at the latest meeting of the Executive Flow Oversight Board (EFOB), held at University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH).

This was the first EFOB that was held at UHH and future meetings will continue to rotate across the three acute hospitals.

The key objective of EFOB is to oversee and connect the various strands of priority work across the health board and the partnerships, to bring performance improvement, enhanced patient safety and even greater staff wellbeing.

EFOB’s aim is to oversee and monitor the improvement work within NHS Lanarkshire and the two university health & social care partnerships.

The EFOB at UHH focused on the sites approach to implementing a six step model to:

  • improve patient care and experience;
  • improve staff experience and wellbeing.

A number of actions are planned including:

  • Stabilisation of emergency department workforce
  • Development of Heart Failure virtual ward capacity to deliver increased capacity for early supported discharge in heart failure patients and increased use of Hospital @ Home for ongoing acute level care out of hospital.
  • Increased use of the discharge lounge to free up ward capacity
  • Protection of Minors capacity in ED
  • Joint work with South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership to support patient’s being discharged on their planned date of discharge.

Russell Coulthard, NHS Lanarkshire Director of Acute Services, said: “I was very pleased to be at UHH EFOB meeting to hear from site colleagues about the transformational approaches that have already been implemented and the further plans to deliver real improvements to patient flow.

“EFOB has a crucial role in achieving our improvement ambitions, and the positive feedback we received about having the meeting on site underlines our decision to continue to hold them at our acute hospitals over the coming months.”

Speaking about recent successes at University Hospital Hairmyres, Margaret Meek said:  “I would like to say ‘thank you to all the UHH team, it is inspiring how teams continue to innovate and work together to enhance the service we provide to our patients”.
