New feature boosts innovative patient observations system

Jun 24, 2024

Our digital patient observations system is going from strength to strength with the addition of a new feature to alert staff to take action.

Spearheaded by the project to create the new University Hospital Monklands, Patientrack has been introduced in wards in our acute hospitals and in the emergency department at University Hospital Monklands.

The rollout, coordinated by the Monklands Replacement Project (MRP), allows staff at the patient’s bedside to record patient observations on an iPad rather than a paper chart, creating a standardised electronic recording system.

MRP Redesign Lead Donna McHenry said: “Use of this technology reflects the push for innovation that’s at the core of NHS Lanarkshire’s current focus on Transformation and Reform.

“Due to its success in improving patient safety, Patientrack’s ‘alerting’ feature is being introduced in a new UHM ward each week.

“It sends an automated message to the nurse in charge about any patient on the ward with a “NEWS” score of seven or above, which ensures the sickest patients are seen first.

“NEWS (National Early Warning Score) is a tool that calculates an overall score from vital signs that are key to identifying, escalating and prioritising patient deterioration.

“UHM was only the second hospital in Scotland to use Patientrack and the first to deploy it in an emergency department.

“New digital innovations like this will help us on our journey to opening Scotland’s first digital hospital at Wester Moffat in Airdrie.”
