D-Day anniversary concert

May 30, 2024

Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland are thrilled to announce a special concert to pay tribute to the men and women whose bravery ultimately led to the success of the Allied D-Day landings and the beginning of the road to victory in Europe.

This event, at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh on Thursday, June 6, 2024, will serve as Scotland’s national D-Day commemorative tribute, marking the historic events that occurred 80 years ago to the day when Allied forces launched one of the most daring operations of World War 2, and the largest amphibious landing in military history.

The evening will offer a unique blend of music and storytelling, drawing from eyewitness accounts. From the preparations for D-Day to Operation Overlord, the concert will guide the audience through Scotland’s crucial role in the Allied landing, concluding with a moment of Remembrance.

Leading us through the evening will be the distinguished voice of Alasdair Hutton OBE TD, former voice of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Providing the music will be the world-renowned band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines Band, Scotland, featuring their impressive Corps of Drums, along with the Lowland and Highland Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Military Wives Choir, and special guests.

We will pay tribute to their heroism, and that of the home front in our D-Day 80th Anniversary concert, Scotland’s Salute.

NHS Lanarkshire has received the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award for outstanding support towards the Armed Forces community.

Representing the highest badge of honour, the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Awards are awarded to organisations that employ and support those who serve, veterans and their families.

Craig Cunningham, NHS Lanarkshire’s Armed Forces and Veteran’s Champion said:

“This fantastic event will help Scotland unite to pay tribute to the men and women, both serving and civilian, whose bravery ultimately led to the success of the Allied D-Day landings and the beginning of the road to victory in Europe.

“NHS Lanarkshire is fully committed to the Armed Forces Covenant and exhibit this both in terms of delivery of health services for armed forces personnel and veterans as well as support for employment of our Reserves and veterans.

“We support our staff who have signed up as Reserves and have a range of HR policies in place for veterans, and Reserves as well as spouses and partners of those serving in the Armed Forces.

“In relation to provision of health services, NHS Lanarkshire and the two Health & Social Care Partnerships offer a dedicated pathway, Veterans First Point, for veterans and their families living in Lanarkshire who require psychological support/other mental health support.  This service was designed by veterans, for veterans and their families, and is staffed by psychologists and veterans peer workers and offers advice and support when they need it most.

“Veterans First Point (VFP) is also there for veterans and their families who experience any issues moving from a life in the military to living as a civilian.

“Additionally, we also work with the Defence Medical Welfare Service who provide direct support for veterans in accessing other services which might assist the patient in their lives outwith the hospital environment for example home supports and respite breaks.”

Tickets for this commemorative event are now available for purchase through the Usher Hall booking office, priced at £18.70.

This charity event will help to support The Royal British Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland in their continued support of the Armed Forces community in Scotland. More about the works these charities carry out and be found at the following links:
