The national management training scheme identifies, recruits and develops graduate level individuals who have the potential to make a long-term contribution to public services in Scotland.
The scheme is led by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and we develop and support trainees local.
One of our current trainees is Caitlin Allen-Collins who joined us in September. As part of her organisational orientation, Caitlin has met with key leaders including the executive directors, the Chairman HSCP Chief officers, and our Chief Executive, Professor Jann Gardner.
Caitlin, who moved from her home in Northern Ireland to Scotland specifically to join the management training scheme, began her first placement recently in an operational management role with Laboratory Services, based in University Hospital Wishaw.
Caitlin said: “Despite being a homebody, I decided to relocate to Scotland as the opportunity I am being offered through the management training scheme will not only enhance my career but also help shape me as an individual.
“Prior to joining the scheme I completed my Under Graduate in ‘Marketing and Management’ with the University of Durham and my Post Graduate in ‘Medical Ethics and Law’ at Keele University. However, I grew my interest in healthcare through my role as the Northern Irish Lay Representative with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, and being the North East Representative on the NHS England Youth Forum.
“Within my first couple months of joining NHS Lanarkshire I have met with key members of staff whose experience and words of wisdom I hope to carry throughout my career.
“For me getting to interact with different departments enhances my knowledge and gives me a wider perspective of the healthcare system. This will ultimately aid my management journey and career.
“I’m not sure where I want to end up upon completion of the scheme, but I know I want to be part of a system which is challenging itself to enhance the patient experience and push for innovation.”
Professor Gardner added: “I am delighted to have met and be mentoring Caitlin, all be it with a very light touch..
“It is a pleasure to speak to someone who has come to us through the national management training scheme and is enjoying her time at NHS Lanarkshire. Management trainees play a major role in both the future and the past of the NHS including NHS Lanarkshire.
“Whatever is in store for Caitlin we hope we have inspired her that a career with the NHS the place for her to spend her future working years.”
