Sunday 26 November is World Sustainable Transport Day!
This event, by the United Nations, recognises the important role of safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all in achieving our sustainable development goals.
Why not take some time on the 26th November to celebrate World Sustainable Transport Day and consider how you travel and the impact it has on your health and the environment?
Reducing the number of cars on roads would be hugely beneficial to our environment and our health. More sustainable options of transportation include walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling. Walking and cycling not only significantly reduces your carbon footprint but are great for your health and wellbeing.
It may not be practical for everyone to adopt these alternative modes of transport permanently but it can still make a difference to choose them every now and then. For those feeling ambitious and want to lower their personal carbon footprint, try setting goals for yourself such as taking public transport once a week or carpooling to work with colleagues.
Craig Brown, Head of Sustainability & Environmental Performance, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “To meet net zero within Lanarkshire and across Scotland as a whole, we all have a responsibility to embrace Sustainable Transport as much as possible when it is practical.
“This may be walking, cycling, using public transport or car sharing. There are so many potential benefits (other than the environmental) by embracing these options including the physical, mental and financial positives.
“If your destination is too far to walk or cycle public transport is a great alternative as shifting from cars to public transport can reduce up to 2.2 tons of carbon emissions annually per individual. If you travel by car, carpooling can reduce up to 1.0 tons of carbon emissions and help lower the number of vehicles on our roads.
“Don’t forget, for those looking to give cycling a try – NHS Lanarkshire offers free 30 day e-bike loans! There are now an additional 18 Dawes Arc 2 folding e-bikes on offer for bands 2-5 and student nurses. Staff within these bandings can take advantage of a free 30-day loan and thereafter, there is a cost per month of £20 for loan of an e-bike.
“All staff on other bandings can also sign up to access a free, 30-day loan for these e-bikes, however, there is a waiting list.”
