Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states to honour armed forces members who lost their lives in the line of duty during the First World War. It is also a day to remember British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women who were involved in the two world wars and later conflicts.
The day coincides with the actual day World War I ended, which was at 11am on 11 November 1918. Therefore, Remembrance Day will be celebrated on Saturday 11 November this year.
To mark Remembrance Day, University Hospitals Hairmyres, Monklands and Wishaw will be lit-up in red from the evening of Friday 10 November until the evening of Sunday 12 November.
Craig Cunningham, NHS Lanarkshire’s armed forces and veteran’s champion, said: “NHS Lanarkshire and the two health and social care partnerships are delighted to show our support for Remembrance Day in honour of the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, throughout our Armed Forces and civilian services and pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring that no-one is forgotten.”
