A comprehensive support service for veterans living in Lanarkshire been awarded a coveted professional accreditation.

Recognising compassionate and meaningful support – and a high level of compliance with rigorous quality standards –The Royal College of Psychiatrists have formally endorsed Veterans First Point (V1P) Lanarkshire.

The service was designed by veterans, for veterans, and is staffed by veteran peer workers and psychologists, offering advice and support when it is needed most.

“This accreditation is testament to the tireless work, dedication and commitment to excellence of an exceptional team,” said Dr Jennifer Ring, Counselling Psychologist of V1P.

“Adjusting to civilian life after service in the armed forces can be tough. Many ex-military personnel make a smooth and successful transition, but some struggle, either due to the nature of their service or other factors, and benefit from specialist support.

“We have well-established networks, processes and support in place and this formal recognition is a reflection of that.”

Veterans can self-refer to V1P or be referred by other professionals. Specially-trained veteran peer support workers, who are military veterans themselves and understand the challenges, initially engage veterans and assess any and all needs.

Peer support workers either meet those needs themselves or signpost to a range of specialist veteran support organisations. Where there are mental health needs, V1P have a clinical team who provide individualised, evidence-based interventions. A clinical signposting appointment with an appropriately trained clinician is offered within two weeks of completing registration.

Craig Cunningham, NHS Lanarkshire’s Veterans’ Champion, added: “V1P is an exceptional service working at the heart of communities and providing real-world support and access that veterans themselves both recognise and embrace.

“This professional accreditation consolidates the high regard in which this vital team is held both locally and nationally.”

NHS Lanarkshire is fully committed to the Armed Forces Covenant and exhibits this both in terms of delivery of health services for armed forces personnel and veterans, as well as support for employment of our Reserves and veterans.
