Today (Wednesday 20 September) is National Fitness Day!
On National Fitness Day, we have the opportunity to emphasise the importance of physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages. Being physically active has numerous short and long-term advantages, whether you’re just getting started or have been doing it for a while.
David Kennedy, health improvement senior – physical activity, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “National Fitness Day is a great event to remind people that physical activity doesn’t need to be gruelling exercise, it can be anything from walking, washing the dishes, or parking your car further away, it really doesn’t matter what you do – as long as it’s something you enjoy!
“There are a variety of local services available within Lanarkshire for you to take part in activities that suit you and your family. However, if you prefer to be active at home, there are lots of options too. Whether you’re going it in the garden, doing squats whilst the kettle is boiling or doing an exercise video online, it all counts!
“Being active throughout the day can help reduce anxiety as well as improve our sleep. It can also help improve our immune response, bone strength and brain health as well as reduce the risk of heart disease. There are also the social benefits if you like to be active socially, it’s a great way to get to know new people.”
