May is National Walking Month, and there are lots of opportunities in Lanarkshire to get your steps in, including Get Walking Lanarkshire’s free Health Walks.
As the daylight is lasting a little longer, and the Spring weather is in full swing, walking is a great way to become more active as it’s free, low impact, requires no special equipment, and pace and distance can be easily increased.
Get Walking Lanarkshire offers a programme of free Health Walks across North and South Lanarkshire, from Cumbernauld to Biggar and from East Kilbride to Newarthill (and many places in between). Their Health Walks last no longer than an hour and are a great way to meet new people, as it’s exercise with added bonus of friendly company, a good chat and fresh air!
View their available Health Walks, and book your slot via the Paths for All website.
And, if you’re thinking of signing up for this year’s Walking Challenge, the Health Walks are a great way to contribute to your steps, as they’re suitable for all ages and abilities and are particularly suitable for people who are looking to become a bit more active.
Paula Hubens, health walks Co-ordinator – Get Walking Lanarkshire, commented: “We welcome all to our Health Walks, both to attend and volunteer!
“Walking is good for heart and lungs, bones and muscles, strength and balance. It improves mood, reduces stress and leads to better sleep. It is very sociable too: walking and talking at the same time go together very well!
“We would love to see you there, and it’s a great way for those doing the Walking Challenge to add in extra steps, they’re very friendly and most groups go to a café after the walk for a cuppa and a chat. If you’d like to come along, please book for your first walk.”
David Kennedy, physical activity health improvement senior, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “With the Walking Challenge registration now open, Walking Month is a great time to get out and about whether you’ve done it before or are keen to give it a try.
“The Getting Walking Lanarkshire Health Walks also offer many benefits for those who attend including a boost to your social, health and mental wellbeing.
“I’ve got my team sorted for the Walking Challenge and can’t wait to get started!”
