Dr Arun Iyer, consultant ENT surgeon/otologist, University Hospital Wishaw, won the Global Citizenship award at the fifth Staff Awards ceremony which was held virtually via Microsoft Teams.
Arun has worked all around the world teaching pioneering endoscopic ear surgery techniques. He has been invited to lecture in Harvard, Sydney, Hong Kong, USA, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan.
Arun said: “I would like to thank everyone for this award, it means a lot to me.
“I love knowing the work I do is making a great impact on everyone and I am glad I can share my knowledge with the NHS and surgeons all around the world. Not only is teaching a big part of my life but I also love to do as much as I can for different charities.
“I collected and recycled many surgical instruments for use in developing countries and have fundraised by cooking for members of staff in a programmed called ‘going veggie for Haiti’ which has been helping flood and earthquake victims in Haiti and India.”
Arun helped a young boy who had no external ears from Gambia last year when he operated on him and fitted him with bone anchored hearing aids. This enabled the young boy to move to another school as he no longer needed to attend a school for the deaf.
A member of a patient’s family spoke on Dr Iyer saying: “Having someone like him in the NHS, not only for his specialist knowledge and skills, but how he focuses on his patients and carers with a personal touch, is a credit to himself and the organisation.
“Dr Iyer recognises that patients and families can be worried and concerned and his approach makes you feel that the care you will receive will be the very best and it was.”
