SPOTLIGHT

You don’t have to feel alone living with long-term pain

Sep 15, 2026

Living with chronic pain can feel overwhelming, especially when it is difficult to explain the experience to others. However, advice, information and opportunities to connect with people who understand are available.

As part of Global Pain Awareness Month, NHS Lanarkshire is highlighting organisations including Pain Concern, Pain Association Scotland and the British Pain Society. They provide a range of resources to help people better understand chronic pain and find ways to manage its impact.

Staying connected, remaining active where possible and seeking support early can help improve confidence, wellbeing and quality of life.

Kieran Dinwoodie, Chair of NHS Lanarkshire’s Chronic Pain Task and Finish Group, said: “Many people tell us that discovering they are not alone can make a real difference. Being able to connect with others who understand what living with pain feels like can be incredibly valuable.

“Whether someone is looking for practical advice, educational resources or peer support, organisations across Scotland are ready to help. We want people to know that this support exists and feel confident accessing it.”

Anyone affected by chronic pain, either personally or while supporting someone else, is encouraged to explore the help available and reach out when needed.
