Supporting patients to self-administer vitamin B12 injections

Aug 6, 2026

Your B12, your choice

Eligible patients across Lanarkshire who receive regular vitamin B12 injections are now being offered the option to administer their injections at home.

The programme, which is being rolled out through Treatment Rooms across Lanarkshire, gives patients greater flexibility, independence and control over their care. Patients choosing self-administration will receive training, education and ongoing support from NHS staff to ensure they feel confident administering injections safely.

Vitamin B12 appointments are among the most frequently booked Treatment Room appointments. Offering suitable patients the option to self-administer at home helps free up capacity for patients requiring more complex clinical care.

The programme is entirely optional. Patients can continue attending appointments for their injections if preferred and can return to staff-administered injections at any time.

Staff are now discussing the option with eligible patients during routine appointments. Patients do not need to take any action and will be provided with information and support at their next B12 appointment.
