Staff working in mental health services at University Hospital Wishaw have been thanked for their continued commitment to patients, following the publication of a Healthcare Improvement Scotland inspection report.

The inspection looked at three mental health wards and the intensive psychiatric care unit at the hospital. The report identified some areas where improvement is required, while also praising the care, compassion and professionalism shown by staff every day.

Inspectors noted staff treated patients with care and compassion, leadership was visible on the wards, and younger staff felt well supported. Student nurses were also complimentary about their learning experiences.

Work has already started to put the required improvements in place and taking action to strengthen practice, documentation and patient care. The work is focussed on supporting staff and ensuring patients continue to receive safe, high-quality and person-centred care.

Claire Rae, chief officer, University Health & Social Care North Lanarkshire, said: “I want to sincerely thank our mental health staff for the care, compassion and dedication they show every day.

“Mental health services support people at some of the most difficult points in their lives. Staff often work in complex and challenging circumstances, providing care with skill, patience and compassion.

“We know the publication of an inspection report can feel difficult for colleagues, particularly when they are already working incredibly hard to support patients and families. It is important that we recognise the positive feedback in the report, including the inspectors’ comments about the kindness and professionalism of our staff.

“We fully accept that improvements are needed and work has already started to address the requirements set out by Healthcare Improvement Scotland to build on the good practice already in place.

“This improvement work is about supporting our staff, strengthening our services and making sure we continue to provide safe, compassionate and person-centred care for patients.”
