New bike sheds for Hairmyres and Wishaw

May 20, 2026

New secure bicycle sheds have been installed at University Hospital Hairmyres and University Hospital Wishaw.

They add more capacity along with the existing bike shed at each site.

At Hairmyres the new shed is opposite the original shed (west of the main entrance). It’s also near the bike repair station, which provides minor maintenance.

Pictured at the new shed are Ruth Currie, Head of Physiotherapy, and Patrick Jamieson, Chief Respiratory Physiologist, who both agreed it would help over the summer when the original shed could become very busy.

Both sheds have the same code number, which has recently been changed as a precaution. Staff who want to cycle to work can ask for the code by showing ID at the security office in the main entrance corridor. Or by emailing NHS Lanarkshire’s Bike User Group (BUG): bikeusergroup@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk.

The new Wishaw shed is across the service road from the main entrance, behind the bus stop at car park 7. It’s also opposite the UHW bike repair station. The original bike shed is still at the side entrance near the restaurant.

Both sheds have the same code number. Staff who need the code can ask for it by showing ID at the security office in the restaurant corridor (or emailing the BUG, as above).

Like the original sheds, installed in 2020, funding for the new ones came from the Cycling Friendly programme for both units and groundworks.

Derek York, Bike User Group Voluntary Lead, said: “We’re grateful to Cycling Scotland for funding the new sheds – installing them in spring is good timing for cycling. The new units have extra weather protection, in response to feedback from staff.

“The new sheds are just as secure as the existing ones but we’d still recommend staff lock onto the rack inside the shed using robust D-lock or heavy duty chain. Staff should be cautious about using the sheds overnight and always make sure the doors slam shut.”

Craig Brown, Head of Sustainability & Environmental Performance, said: “This is great work, adding more usable storage that will hopefully be appreciated by avid bike users.”

Staff can find further information about facilities, Cycle to Work scheme, routes and more on the Bike User Group FirstPort site.
