Hairmyres improvement workshops continue to build momentum for safer care

Mar 20, 2026

Staff from across University Hospital Hairmyres have taken part in a second round of improvement workshops as part of the hospital’s Site Safety Improvement Programme (SSIP).

The sessions follow the launch of the workshops last month and brought together colleagues from a wide range of clinical and support services to continue identifying practical changes that can improve patient flow, staff experience and safety across the site.

The workshops focused on developing a shared theory for change, exploring how teams can test improvements in practice and identifying the support required to turn ideas into action.

Participants also heard from the Scottish Centre for Simulation and Clinical Human Factors, who shared how simulation can support improvement work and help teams understand how new processes might work in real clinical environments.

Marie-Claire Leese, Senior Improvement Advisor, said: “The energy and engagement from staff across the site has been fantastic. These workshops are creating space for colleagues to step back from day-to-day pressures and work together on practical ideas that can make a real difference for patients and staff.

“What has also come through strongly is the importance of maintaining momentum and ensuring the ideas generated during the sessions lead to meaningful action. Staff have spoken about focusing on achievable improvements and continuing to build a culture where teams feel comfortable discussing challenges and solutions together.”

Staff reflected on both what is working well across the site and where there are opportunities to improve. Feedback highlighted the value of bringing colleagues from different teams together to build a shared understanding of the pressures across services. Participants described the sessions as inspiring and welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from across the hospital.

The next stage of the programme will focus on testing some of the ideas identified during the workshops, with improvement champions and the Site Safety Improvement team, as well as our Quality Improvement colleagues supporting services to turn ideas into practical tests of change.

Lynne Huckerby, Deputy Director for Acute Services, said: “These workshops are an important step in bringing staff from across the hospital together to shape how we improve safety and flow at Hairmyres. The ideas and insights shared by colleagues

during the sessions have been incredibly valuable, and it has been encouraging to see the level of engagement and collaboration across teams.

“Improving how we work across the site is essential to delivering the best possible care for our patients and creating a positive working environment for staff. The next stage of this programme will focus on building on the ideas generated during the workshops and testing practical changes that can make a real difference across our services.”

The Site Safety Improvement Programme are now focused on developing the 30-60-90 day programme plan for delivery, with staff across the hospital encouraged to get involved as the work progresses.
