Staff make wish come true with defibrillator donation

Mar 10, 2026

In Hamilton, a defibrillator has been installed through a donation from NHS Lanarkshire’s branch of Unite the Union.

Supporting our Community (SOC) in Hillhouse had reached out to the Community Wish List website to ask for the defibrillator and, with the help of Unite, their request has been granted.

This defibrillator is a potentially lifesaving device which, in an emergency, will increase the survival rates of those experiencing cardiac arrest due to the ease of use for even untrained bystanders.

Unite Branch Chair Leanne Thomson said: “Unite the Union NHS Lanarkshire Branch is very proud to donate this defibrillator, funded by our branch members, in support of SOC.

“SOC is a hub of activity and support at the heart of the community, and as a branch whose members live and work locally, it’s important to us to give something back by ensuring life-saving equipment is available in a place so many people rely on.”

Mark Rouse, Project Coordinator for SOC, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Unite for their support. Having a defibrillator accessible at our centre provides reassurance and could save someone’s life. This donation reflects our shared commitment to improving our community.

“The charity extends heartfelt thanks to Unite for their commitment to supporting local people and enhancing community wellbeing.”

Chair of the South Lanarkshire Council’s Finance and Corporate Resources Committee, Councillor Lesley McDonald, said: “This is another great example of the Community Wish List and the benefits it can bring to local communities and organisations.

“I would like to thank those who have so generously donated so far.”
