The Alcohol, Cannabis, and Vaping team, within NHS Lanarkshire’s Health Improvement department, has worked on a new, short video to explain and raise further awareness of the harms and effects of alcohol.
As many people may choose to reduce or stop drinking during Dry January, the video offers helpful information as it highlights:
- Alcohol is a depressant, and it can affect our mood
- How it lowers inhibitions meaning people take risks they wouldn’t normally
- How alcohol can become problematic for some people
There are many benefits to stopping or reducing drinking alcohol, such as:
- Physical: Lower blood pressure, reduced diabetes risk, improved cholesterol, better sleep, weight loss, healthier liver
- Mental: More energy, improved mood, clearer thinking
- Financial: Savings from not buying alcohol
The team focuses on preventing and reducing alcohol related harm and work in partnership with the North and South Lanarkshire Alcohol and Drug Partnerships (ADPs) and wider partners using a collaborative approach that aims to reduce the risk of alcohol related harms across Lanarkshire.
Clare McCool, Alcohol, Vaping & Cannabis – Team Leader, NHS Lanarkshire, said: “We play a key role in working with partners to provide information on the low-risk guidelines around alcohol consumption. This is to prevent alcohol related harms across Lanarkshire and early onset drinking in young people, which can lead to problematic drinking in adulthood.
“Having this information in a short, informative and engaging video will provide information on alcohol and its impact to help make informed choices about drinking and understand where to seek support if needed.
“Dry January is a great opportunity for a health reset and encourages long-term positive changes. It helps people to better understand their relationship with alcohol, notice improvements in their mood, sleep and energy levels, and build confidence to continue making healthier choices beyond January.”
