Chair Martin Hill bids farewell to NHS Lanarkshire

Dec 23, 2025

Martin Hill’s term as Chair of the Board of NHS Lanarkshire has come to an end.

Martin said: “As my term of office as Chair comes to a close, I have decided to retire from public service at the end of December. I do so after more than five decades in the NHS, with few regrets and with a huge stock of great memories.

“Having worked in many organisations across Scotland (and even ventured to England earlier in my career), I have seldom come across such committed colleagues as I have had the pleasure to work with in NHS Lanarkshire. We are not without our challenges, but I have always been impressed by the resilience, the creativity and the kindness of the staff I have met during my most recent four years here in Lanarkshire. I have also witnessed real desire to do the best for our patients, often under difficult circumstances.

“As an organisation, NHS Lanarkshire is in a healthy position. Resources are well controlled and we have an executive leadership (and board) which are incredibly committed to supporting staff to deliver the best possible service to our patients, even if that means changes to long-standing systems of work. I would encourage all staff who have constructive ideas for improving patients’ services and experiences to make their voices heard, by engaging with colleagues and with their managers and directors and delivering on our aim of continuous improvement.

“With recent and ongoing investments in additional capacity to reduce waiting times for patients requiring both unscheduled and planned care, with new ways of transforming services, with new and innovative technologies and a culture change programme from which all will benefit, you have much to look forward to across NHS Lanarkshire into 2026. Stronger and more focused collaborations with other health boards and community planning partners to do more in the preventative space will better sustain services and will present new opportunities to manage the demand going forward.

“As I bow out, I would just like to thank you all for your service to the people of Lanarkshire and for the friendship and support you have given me in my role as Chair. I wish each and every one of you a very happy festive season and all the best for 2026.”
