NHS Lanarkshire has published a refreshed, easy-to-use FAQ to support staff working with Hospital at Home Virtual Wards. The guide brings together the most common questions raised across our clinical teams – offering clarity on patient selection, clinical responsibility, monitoring, pathways, documentation and safety processes.

Whether you’re referring patients, reviewing someone already on the virtual ward, or simply want to better understand how the model works, this resource is designed to give you quick, practical answers. The FAQ covers key questions including:

  • What sort of patients can I refer?
  • Are there inclusion/exclusion criteria?
  • Who is responsible for the patient while on the virtual ward?
  • How are bloods, follow-up and monitoring arranged?
  • Where to find Doccla notes on re-attendance?
  • What happens if a patient cannot manage remote monitoring?
  • How are GPs informed?
  • Is Doccla available in other languages/BSL?
  • Are pathways available and how to access them?
  • Does this increase workload for radiology or other services?
  • How reliable is the equipment — and who checks the data?
  • Why use virtual wards instead of opening more beds?

The guide will be kept under review and updated as the system evolves. If you have suggestions or questions not captured, please contact LAN.interface@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk
